US reportedly pushed ASML to cancel chipmaking kit for China early (theregister.com)

"According to some estimates, China was ASML's largest market after Taiwan and South Korea, but made up nearly half the company’s sales in the third quarter of 2023"

Beginning of the end for Western chip manufacturing.

Old business proverb: "Never, ever turn away a paying customer. That's business you will never get back again."

Without those Chinese sales ASML can't get enough funding to maintain its technological lead. Those sales will go to the fledgling Chinese FAB builders instead, allowing them to catch up and then surpass ASML.

In ten years' time, ASML will be no more, and Western semiconductor manufacturers will be very sick if not already dead. And yet another Western industry will become yet another Chinese monopoly, following all those other previous Western industries to oblivion.

The west is only buying time for the inevitable.
