I have yet to find a job where these things are not true. In fact, I very much doubt there’s a job where it is your diploma that gets you that job. It’s almost always your connections. Your diploma from Stanford is more l likely to get you a job because of the name than your success in studying there.

I finished my degree 15 years into my career as a self-taught developer. I probably didn’t need to get it. I do think it made me a more well-rounded person. And I’m proud of myself for accomplishing something that was not easy, by any stretch.



In fields with a lot of demand, like programming, loads of companies will go to recruitment fairs at universities and routinely hire people without any personal connections or professional experience.

Fields like fashion and journalism, on the other hand? Unless Mom or Dad has someone who owes them a favour you'll find there are far more graduates than jobs. Compounded with a nigh-endless supply of people willing to work unpaid internships in the hopes of one day getting paid.
