I used to mine ETH to heat my condo, but at some point mid way through H1 it stopped being interesting. I'd love to know if I'm being counted.

According to Joe Marini (previously Lead Developer Relations for Chrome Web store):

Except chrome will check for update automatically regarardless of whether you use the extension or not.
