People usually have USB-Cs lying around anyway. Macbooks, Chromebooks, many monitors already use them. So do many Android phones.

If waste really was an issue, Apple could do better and not use crappy insulation for their Lightning and MagSafe cables.
I buy 3rd party cables
because
I know the cables will eventually fail in a year or two.
