I think your comment is excellent but doomed to be undervalued by those outside science. I'd guess this is in part because science textbooks and pop sci always present science as a fait accompli. To put it differently, it's as if you listen to a wonderful jazz improvisation and ignore the thousands of hours of 'doodling' on the scales the musician might have done.
