Not just America, the whole West is in decline IMHO.Hong Kong is also done after the China security law.

I’m planning to move back to Asia, where I lived for like a decade. The work culture is harder but it feels much safer, better food, more fun, harsh on crime.

I wouldn’t mind to trade in German and Australian citizenships for Singapore.

My coworkers just let Claude review the PR now instead of reading the code. It seems the entire contract is broken now.

Submitters use LLMs to generate the code and reviewers use LLMs to review it.

This just like my favorite, “We can use LLMs to write the code and write the tests.”

Quietly let that play out.

You’ll have a job for years to come :)

I’m thinking to get a device for reading technical books. Do you think an iPad mini would be the better option? I had a kindle before but it was slow to change pages and I heard even new versions are still not great for PDFs, but would like to get some opinions.

I have a friend at Apple so wouldn’t pay the full price for an iPad.

If you want an e-ink type screen, the Supernotes (or Remarkables, or Viwoods) are all very good at this. Personally I hate trying to read things on iPads.

I'd go with an iPad instead of the mini just to be on the safe side. I have a 12" tablet and it's night and day compared to my 6" Kindle (2020 model). Kindles suck if you try to read pdfs, they don't scale naturally so you can't see shit. Anything with a screen at 10" or more would work fine for pdfs.

Even 10" feels far too large to casually read in bed with.

I doubt anyone reads technical books at bed though.

I read pdfs in bed all the time, but it's not much hassle to zoom and pan on a tablet

i guess that would be an iPaid air as it just got refreshed?

Probably just the iPad, unless you are not at all price sensitive. $350 ($299 refurbished) vs $600 is a big uplift; you can almost buy two iPads for the price of an iPad Air. For just PDF viewing, any Apple CPU is performant enough.

The biggest risk for tourists visiting the USA is the high crime rate and the fact that crazy people are allowed to carry guns. This is an actual risk to my safety and part of the reason why I don’t even want to visit America again.

From a German perspective, the USA is the country with the craziest laws and UAE, Singapore, Thailand and Japan all sound better to me.

Very racist comment. They’re not all the same and this article is about Dubai, not Qatar.

The UAE is the most open country in the ME and even allows gay people which is not legal in Qatar

I’d pick low taxes first. I lived in Singapore, Hong Kong for years and Dubai for few months and it’s significantly safer and cleaner. Taxes are low, law is enforced.

You don’t need freedom of speech if a place is well run. Look at Europe and America. Everyone has an opinion and nothing works properly

I also refuse to connect through the USA. Dubai is a much better place. At least i don’t get interrogated by a random TSA agent on a power trip.

Do you mean CBP? TSA likes their power trips but they don’t get to really interrogate people.

I certainly can’t blame anyone who doesn’t want to connect through the US, especially now.

Sorry, I meant the border security. I’ve generally had a good time in the US, but when you’re already get treated like crap just getting into that country, I’d rather avoid it. Plus places like the UAE don’t require any visas for transit so it’s straightforward!

Yeah, transit through the US is pretty bad. I get the impression they don't really want people doing it. They sure don't put effort into making it easy.

Regardless if it's Switzerland, Germany or the USA. Everyone has better than we have in Australia. I can't wait to go back to Asia after citizenship to join the developed world again.

I highly doubt that. As a German who lived in Asia and now Australia, this is the most incompetent country. They can't get anything right. I live in the city of Sydney and can only get 1 Gbps down and 200 mbps up for 109 AUD a month. I lived in 2017 in Singapore and the internet was already better than that for 1/3 of the price.

Australia seems to be pretty backwards in general though.

What a time to be alive to see people put "only" in front of "1gbps". We've come very far.

You can upgrade that to 2Gbps if you pay the network upgrade fee (basically you pay for the NTD and house-side wiring), after that it costs around AUD 150 per month, which is kind of reasonable…

In Belgium you get 500/100 for 65 euro, which is even worse.

Shouldn’t this be “Tell HN”?
