The only way to access Silk road was through TOR

Yes, but that means SR users were using up Tor bandwidth, they weren't necessarily supplying any.

Wow. Embarrassing. Thanks for catching that.

What about the bots that are not identifying themselves as such?

Thats exactly right. ACA doesnt force you to offer insurance, but if you do your rates are likely to go up as a startup.

* If you're a startup that mostly employs 20-something males.

It's nothing to do with being a startup and everything to do with demographics.

Additionally, for really small startups that don't have a giant pile of capital or enough people for a group plan, the healthcare exchanges make insurance "possible" instead of "better hope you're married and the spouse can do family plan".

I really appreciate the note. It is an actual person, not a bot that chats with each user but I actually agree with your perspective. It can be seen as intrusive. As the CEO, I'm making the executive decision to take the chat feature off the blog today. Thanks for helping improve our user experience!

I'm very glad you're making the executive decision as the CEO to remove the chat feature off the blog as opposed to just doing it.

Hah. Its not that simple to just pull off. The js code snippet is part of the theme and so we have to restructure several things to selectively place it on certain pages and not others. As a developer I hate having interrupts come in so I dont do that to my guys. We put it in the queue, it'll get done this week.

I get why systems like that exists, I just dont understand how I got caught in that flag. If we are sitting in a coworking space and all come from the IP, does that flag us as a ring?

> If we are sitting in a coworking space and all come from the IP, does that flag us as a ring?

Quite probably. If you know a good way to distinguish between such a circumstance and a deliberate voting ring then let the site designers know!

I'd just avoid voting on your collegues/friends' stuff. HN is so highly trafficed that if it was going to get near the front page it would anyway without those few extra votes and if it wasn't it wouldn't anyway even with those few extra votes.

EDIT: Actually, cancel that last bit. I see some of the items on the front page currently don't seem to have many points so a few friends voting could make a difference. Though I'd still refrain as most major sites that include user voting will have this sort of voting ring detection so you will get nobbled at some point.

yes, still nothing

I pressed upvote. did it work?

I know it doesnt work because I click upvote and it doesnt assign any points while a friend sitting right next to me could do the same thing and assign points. Both he and I have under 100 Karma points

Is this on a submission? A poll? A comment? Or something else? Did you reload the page? Can you upvote submissions? Can you vote in a poll?

In short, what have you tried? You're really not giving us much to go on ...

Do you write programs for other people to use? What do you do when they say "It doesn't work!" And give you no further information?
