Yes, the risk-taking strategy of working towards a potentially high-impact publication is not worth the reward (as measured in citation rate comparing low-impact and high-impact articles )- see Foster et al Tradition and Innovation in Scientists Research Strategies http://arxiv.org/pdf/1302.6906.pdf
I usually build apps. This is my first attempt at a content driven website. It's similar to the chive, but extracts the things which I like the most about the chive (architecture, travel and girls) and focuses entirely on them. Let me know what you think!
This is really interesting- I've actually wanted to tie the different aspects of my life together in one place- I'm programmer but also an artist. I'd like to promote both at the same time and this looks like a place I could do that. If anything, thanks for hosting my portfolio!
Thanks. I built this for the same reasons. We all have diverse hobbies and resumes can't capture all of the interesting stuff that we do. I also wanted to create a mechanism for better project discovery. Mycelial accomplishes this with tags. If you tag the core components/technologies of your projects, they will automatically be related to other similar projects via the sporeprint page.
Nice format. I like the simple design you've got going on. Building some projects at the moment... tagging my projects with the different tools I've used is especially useful. I can see how when there are more users I can connect my projects with others using the same technology. Nice Job!
As a PhD student studying ape communication there is nothing more enticing then landing a spot on the Facebook data science team. I bet the best way for a current student to get a job there in the future would be to initiate an academic collaboration while still in the lab.
Am I the only one who sees most of my Friends on Facebook filling out junk information. I have two kids, a wife, and no sibling on Facebook, but in reality those are just acquaintances, I have lots of siblings, but no wife, nor kids. Most of the people I interact with on Facebook do something similar. Fake occupations, etc. etc.
We have a very different circle of acquaintances. I only know a few people that have fake information on FB out of a few hundred "friends." The most common I see is just a name change while applying to grad school. I see very few fake relationships, though I did see it more often in high school.
I remember on Myspace I had a lot of friends who were "99 years old". These sites are really about establishing a presence to sell artistic goods. The rest is kinda silly. Who has time to fill out Facebook like some sort of questionnaire? Its not the census, so their is no penalty for inaccurate information.
Interesting site- if anything it's let me know how disorganized my bookmarks are. I can see how using this app would encourage one to categorize their daily inventory of interesting links to properly labeled folders.
Just a comment on the layout: it's certainly clean and straight-forward however on the feed page I would rather see the link title have more prominence over the user icon. Of course, this preference of mine comes from years of using HN and reddit.
Also, I would like to be able to see all the users that are on the site- is that possible?
